About the shelter

Shelter for abandoned animals of City of Zagreb exists since January 2001. It is located at Dumovec, on the eastern edge of the City. You can reach the shelter driving on the Sesvete. Dugo Selo road (turn at the church in Sesvetski Kraljevac) or from the Ivanja Reka – Oborovo road. Both access points have road signs which will help you find your way.   The City shelter was built by adapting and renovating an old agricultural building so it is completely adequate for housing and care of abandoned dogs in Zagreb area. The shelter cares for many different kinds and breeds of dogs whose common destiny is that they were unwanted.

All dogs that are ready for adoption in the shelter have been vaccinated against rabies and all common infectious diseases, microchipped, and the adults have also been spayed or neutered. When adopting a puppy, the new owner gets free spaying or neutering at the shelter, per appointment, when the puppy is 5-6 months old. Upon adoption, the new owner signs an adoption contract with the shelter.

For all questions about pet adoption please email us at udomljavanje@dumovec.hr, and for all information about our education programmes please email us at edukacija@dumovec.hr

Animal care service

Animal care service

At the beginning of April 2009., we got a whole new team at the Shelter and since then until the end of 2015., they helped and rescued thousands of dogs and injured cats and over 3 500 wild animals were saved from streets of Zagreb.

Our four member team cares daily for abandoned dogs left on the streets of Zagreb by their irresponsible owners, as well as cats and other various species of animals that are in danger wondering in public spaces in the city. We rescued birds (ducks, kites, hawks, black birds, owls, peacocks swans etc.), wild animals (foxes, snakes, martens, hedgehogs, deer, squirrels, otters…) and some exotic species such as Iguanas and various turtles.

With our new car, the Fiat Doblo sponsored by Nestle Purina Pet Care, our animal care service became well recognizable to all our citizens. Today, the service has two cars and two field teams for helping animals, either to return them to their homes or for injured and sick wild animals that need help. Together with city offices for forestry and agriculture, we created a protocol for collaboration with police, firefighters, 112 emergency call centre, info centre and Municipal service and Transport Sector. Together with veterinary inspection of City of Zagreb, we also help neglected and abused animals.

Adoption Supervision

In 2009, we visited 517 homes and found many happy pets and as many happy families! Due to inappropriate care and conditions, we also took away several adopted animals and managed to improve living conditions for some others. When we didn't find many owners at home or when we didn't manage to visit, we will surely do so very soon. We would like to thank everyone who opened their hearts and homes to abandoned cats and dogs and we invite everybody to send us stories and pictures of your adopted pets. We shall publish them on this web site and perhaps encourage more people to adopt abandoned pets and give them a loving home. If you decide to get a pet, there are some 170 dogs waiting at the shelter and perhaps one of them can become your best friend for life. We will be happy to help with advice, and before visiting the shelter you can look at the Questionnaire for adopting a dog and the adoption contract.
